MENA2050 and the University of Connecticut launch a strategic partnership
21 April 2026
MENA2050 is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Connecticut, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership to strengthen academic cooperation, innovation, and cross-regional collaboration.
This agreement reflects a shared vision between both institutions: to build meaningful partnerships that connect research, education, and innovation to address key challenges and opportunities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration across joint research initiatives, academic exchange, and the co-organization of symposia, workshops, and conferences.
Through this partnership, MENA2050 and UConn aim to encourage direct collaboration between faculty, researchers, students, and institutional partners. The agreement is designed as a flexible platform for cooperation, enabling both institutions to develop targeted projects aligned with shared priorities.
This partnership is structured to expand over time through targeted initiatives and project-based engagement, ensuring long-term sustainability and impact.
This partnership does not begin from scratch. It builds on a growing history of engagement between MENA2050 and UConn, including the Lieberman Abrahamic Program planning workshop held in Stamford, CT, in September 2024, which brought together experts and stakeholders to explore opportunities across research, innovation, and policy dialogue.
It also aligns closely with UConn’s Abrahamic Programs, an interdisciplinary initiative that promotes education, dialogue, and research inspired by the Abrahamic traditions. These programs bring together scholars, policymakers, and civil society actors to foster mutual understanding, coexistence, and constructive engagement across cultures and regions. By focusing on shared heritage and values, they provide a platform for addressing global challenges through cooperation rather than division.
This partnership is built on the foundations of the legacy of the late Senator Joe Lieberman, a former member of the MENA2050 Advisory Board and a lifetime supporter of UConn, who actively supported initiatives promoting dialogue, cooperation, and academic collaboration across institutions and regions.
His commitment to strengthening bridges between academic, policy, and civic communities continues to inspire the work carried forward through this partnership.
The partnership has been strengthened over time through close collaboration with key institutional leaders, primarily the visionary Professor Dan Weiner, UConn's Vice President for Global Affairs, whose leadership has been instrumental in advancing this relationship.
We also acknowledge the key role of our dear MENA2050 member Sercan Canbolat (Assistant Professor of Political Science in Residence and Director of Abrahamic Programs at UConn), whose continued commitment to both organizations has helped facilitate the engagement between them.
A recent outcome of this partnership is MENA2050’s participation in the Abrahamic Hub, an ambitious initiative co-founded by UConn and Technion to serve as a digital ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship across the MENA region.
The Abrahamic Hub is envisioned as a collaborative platform bringing together innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers, and institutions to co-create solutions to shared regional challenges. At its core, the Hub is inspired by the idea that shared values and cultural heritage can serve as a foundation for constructive cooperation, innovation, and sustainable development.
The Hub will facilitate partnerships between entrepreneurs, researchers, innovators, and policymakers across the MENA region, enabling meaningful cross-border collaboration. It will provide access to curated research, reports, and regional insights. It will support initiatives addressing climate, water, urbanization, digital transformation, and more.
By connecting institutions, individuals, and ideas, the platform aims to contribute to:
Increased cross-border collaboration on high-impact projects
The growth of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem
A deeper understanding of shared challenges and collective solutions
The positioning of the MENA region as a global hub for innovation and knowledge exchange
The partnership between MENA2050 and UConn marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration grounded in shared values, academic excellence, and a commitment to impact.
As both institutions move forward with the Abrahamic Hub and other initiatives, the focus will remain on translating ideas into action and building meaningful, lasting connections across the region.
This collaboration goes beyond a formal agreement, reflecting a shared vision for a more connected and innovative future.
